SOUTH AFRICA 2 – 0 ARGENTINA
No, there is no football on this site! This is the score line from a Sunday of golf and rugby.
Ernie got the ball rolling by duffing up his Argie opponent in his back garden (otherwise known as The Wentworth Club) and then the Springboks ended the run of unpredictable results in the Rugby World Cup by knocking out the surprise package Pumas in the semi final. I’m guessing Ernie has a few less bruises and a few more quid for his efforts!
Keen observers of golf would have noted some interesting points from the final of the HSBC matchplay. Firstly, that South Africa and Argentina have reputations for huge consumption of red meat. Both competitors looked like they have had their fair share, providing a truly heavyweight contest. It would have been a great climax if a play-off had arrived and was a challenge of who could devour a 64oz steak the quickest. That’s entertainment!
Also, there was an interesting fact that surfaced about Angel. After his US Open triumph he pooh-poohed sport science and psychology, instead putting his success down to ‘I smoke’. Now, we discover he has given up! Does this mean he has been on the phone to Bob Rotella? Somehow I doubt it. It probably has more to do with the fact that smoking knackers your sense of taste and such an obvious champion pie-eater must be keen to savour every last bite!
Anyway, well done Ernie! Another million quid hits the old sky-rocket and somewhat ludicrously you are propelled to the top of the Order of Merit. Not quite the same as beating a 150-strong field in stroke play is it?
